What is OCB?
OCB is a community band based in Olney, Maryland with members of all ages and abilities. OCB provides free entertainment and exposure to the arts, and forms an integral part of the program at community festivals, celebrations, and charity events.
What are the requirements for membership?
OCB does not have any auditions. The Band is comprised primarily of amateur musicians at the intermediate and advanced level of their respective instruments.
When and where do you rehearse?
OCB rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:30pm at Blake High School in Silver Spring, MD., from early September through mid-July.
What do I need to bring with me?
All you need to bring is your instrument (except percussion), your music folder, a pencil, and a music stand to performances.
Do you have membership dues?
Yes, dues are $30 per semester. Students are exempt. Dues helps defray Band operational costs including rehearsal room, sheet music and other fundamental expenses.
Can I pay my dues online?
Yes, you can pay dues through our donation portal here.
Is there a required uniform?
For the spring/summer performances there is an OCB polo shirt we ask everyone to purchase. Shirts orders will be taken at a rehearsal. Most shirts costs $40; 2XL to 4XL cost $45 (not including shipping and handling.) Hats are also available to order for $15.
Do I have to live in Olney to join OCB?
No, OCB membership comes from throughout the region.
What part do I play?
Parts will be assigned by either the director or your section leader.
What kind of music does OCB play?
OCB performs music from a wide range of genres including classical, marches, Broadway, jazz, Americana, and more.
What if I have to miss a rehearsal or performance?
We ask that everyone make every effort to attend rehearsals and performances. However, we understand conflicts arise. If you have a conflict, please just make sure to notify your section leader in advance.
When and where does OCB perform?
The OCB performs at community events throughout the Olney area. Some are outdoors, such as Olney Days in late April, the Sandy Spring Museum’s Strawberry Festival in early June, and the Medstar Montgomery Hospital Annual Women’s Board Picnic & Bazaar in late July. Some are indoors, such as the Mormon Temple Visitor’s Center in December or throughout the year at some of the many local senior living communities in the Olney area.
